I just-so-happened to get a lot of good skate photos in the last few days so I thought I’d share them in a “Random Skate Photos from Taiwan” post.
I’ll keep it quick with just some details of how I shot each one:
(Below) Nikon D700, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, 1/25 sec at f/5.6, ISO 320, Nikon SB-24 on a lightstand approximately head high at camera left shooting straight down the wall (zoomed in to 85mm), Nikon SB-800 with a homemade grid sitting on a wall over head high to camera right (zoomed to 105mm).
(Below) Same basic set up as the picture above, but the SB-800 on the wall to camera right was pointing down more towards the ground for a little moodier effect.
(Below) Nikon D700, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, 1/400 at f/9, ISO 200, Nikon SB-800 at 1/2 power with a 1/4 CTO on the ground behind him. Special Notes: I use a 1/4 CTO to match the warmth of the late afternoon sun. I knew that I wanted to keep a cool feel to the photo so I set the white balance to daylight and finished adjusting later in Apple Aperture. PS – You should really never let your flash get in the photo like that!
(Below) Nikon D700, Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 at 14mm, 1/320, f/6.3, Nikon SB-24 slightly to camera right and high, Nikon SB-800 to camera left. Special Notes: It was bright this day and I wanted to keep a minimal effect with the flashes so they’re basically just two fill flashes to keep the shadows off Shawn’s face.
(Below) Same spot, a few years earlier. Nikon D2x, Sigma 10-20mm, 1/250 at f/5.6, The flash set up on this one is the same as Shawn’s but a storm was brewing so it was darker and gave a much different effect. Both turned out to be good photos, but it reminds you how important light is.
Also note that I’m going to upload larger files than I used to, so if you want to see them bigger, go ahead give ’em a click.
Thanks,
-neil
Wowwww.. Just awesome..
Thanks for the tips again! I like the last photo a lot. The background color, the two angle lines, and the whole composition make the photo very interesting!
Thank you both very much!
Nice work Neil!
that shot of Gav’s wallride is S I C K. awesome awesome awesome. Not only is it all about the lighting but that shadow (due to the lighting) makes the image. I guess that distills down to “it’s all about the lighting.” Keep em coming.
I like the angle on the Johns kickflip and the lighting
Wow! These were all used with a Nikon Sb24? I am buying one today and I also shoot skateboarding. What did you use to make it wireless?
Hi Keaton,
My general techniques for shooting wirelessly are here and here. For skateboarding, I usually use a SB-24, a SB-800 and a few Sunpak 555s. Good luck with your new flash!
